A new project the staff at Owen Clarke Design have been looking at recently is a study for a light displacement high performance weekender. The dual roles of occasional fully crewed regatta racing combined with more relaxed family and shorthanded cruising require a more complex depth of design in the initial feasibility stage. The clients brief called for a no holds barred approach to affordable/available sailing technology to get the most performance or ‘bang for bucks’ within a given budget and size. There have been few restrictions on this design study from the comfort side, with a call for a minimal interior fit-out to include two modest aft sleeping cabins, a single but divided heads/shower room a fully equipped galley and cafe style fit out to the saloon and navigation station. Having said that, the client’s choice of an Avon 3.4m RIB and 25HP outboard to be stowed in a stern garage certainly starts eating in to the available space on board even a simple 50’. Factors such as simplicity of systems and accessibility coupled with the ever-important drive to keep a close eye on weight and its distribution remain a high priority. Primarily intended for sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean the design is now being prepared for the build tender stage to firm up the costs on those choices made. Along with the images and detailed drawings produced Owen Clarke Design have carried out performance analysis which compares various yacht types, Owen Clarke TP52 and our Open 50’s were the first boats to be offered up against this weekender. Various appendage configurations have been reviewed early on in the design stage as this enables the relative performance against cost evaluation to be carried out, an important consideration when a budget limit has been set on the project. Early indications suggest that this minimalist 7500kg cruising yacht has eye opening potential with either, a combination lifting/canting keel, straight forward canting keel or a more traditional fixed fin.
