Since the question of IMOCA potentially moving to a monotype was raised in October 2011, Owen Clarke Design have been working on some potential solutions aimed at simplifying the Open 60, reducing the loads on the skippers and after discussions with potential builders, looking if there is a potential to reduce the cost (per unit) of the boats. Primarily we have undertaken this work internally (not for external use) in order to be able to better understand the challenges and comment with some understanding when being questioned by our existing, future clients and the media with regard to the question; mono-type or prototype?
