Olympian Challenger was built as Airco Distributor in the United States by Mike Plant for the 1986 BOC Around Alone singlehenaded round the world yacht race. She completed this event a further two times in 1990 with Josh Hall as Spirit of Ipswich and 1994 with Niah Vaughan as Jimroda. Since that time the yacht has taken part in numerous trans-atlantic short handed races as well as being used for corporate and management training events. Designed by Rodger Martin, well known for his early BOC/Transat sixty foot designs such as Grinnaker and Coyote, the boat was built in an era when completing the course and not extreme lightness were very much key factors. The construction could be described as robust and heavy compared to modern designs and the result of this has been her long life. She is also a simple and forgiving boat to sail and as such ideal for a sailor making there first foray into long distance short-handed sailing. She has been owned and operated partly for charter since the late nineties by a professional BT Challenge boat skipper and has as a result been MCA coded, although this has been allowed to lapse recently as the boat has not been chartered since 2003. The vessel was last surveyed in October 1999 before it was purchased by the present owner, In 2003 the yacht undertook a complete refit and was chartered for the Transat Jacques Vabres. Olympian Challenger has not been sailed a great deal since then and so is very much ready for long passage making.
