Artform's First Race

Tuesday, 11 November 2003
Prior to taking to sea for four to five days Kip and his new Open 50 'Artforms’ took part in it’s first race on Friday. While not high on the international calendar the regular Friday afternoon races known as the 'Rum Race’ features highly on the local Auckland calendar. In conditions that were not ideally suited to those the boat was designed for and with a local crew made up of sail makers and designers from the local Doyle Sails loft, Owen Clarke designers Tim Sadler and Liz Tier and local marine photographer Paul Todd showed good speed for what was the boats competitive outing albeit semi casual. Starting down wind in the lee of one of Auckland’s icons the harbour bridge Artforms got a clean start, and gybing down wind Kip was 5th at the bottom mark. The upwind beat up the harbour proved a good one, quickly passing a local ULDB 50 and very nearly a well performing local IMS50. The IMS50 was quickly passed downwind and by the next bottom mark Kip was a third. An incorrect sail selection for the final beat to the finish resulted in the third place being lost back to the IMS50. Thanks to Paul Todd from Outside Images NZ for the photos.
