Owen Clarke Design have been working closely with Jonathan Crinion, http://www.jonathancrinion.com a Canadian/ UK sailor and Industrial Designer to create this new Class 40 racing yacht with which he will compete in la Route du Rhum and other events worldwide. Now under construction at Jaz Marine, Cape Town, South Africa. http://www.jazmarine.com The optimised hull has been developed after a systematic testing program was undertaken to fulfil the requirements for an all out race boat but still conforming to the Class 40 association box rule.
Featuring a short coach roof and trench style cockpit with a single tiller operating twin rudders. The lightweight minimalist interior is designed to conform to the Class 40 rules but with no excess. Features include: Simple pipe cots and an island galley together with a centrally placed navigation station more often associated with that of this boats larger open class cousins. A Southern Spars all carbon rig coupled with rod standing rigging and PBO fore and aft rigging complement the high performance aspects of this design.
Following on from this project, a limited production run of Class 40 racing and racer/cruiser designs is now also available with the first delivery available for launch in June 2006. Based on the Design No. 155, hull platform and using an all carbon rig though with a wider cockpit and alternative coach roof and deck layout this boat can be set up for fully crewed and shorthanded racing. The interior can be fitted out to a high standard and will be comfortable enough for basic cruising should the need arise.
Available from Jaz Marine at a price of 276,000.00 Euro. subject to hardware specification and layout options, this Class 40 is a must for those looking to input their own ideas and knowledge on to a limited production boat.
