Construction starts on new Owen Clarke cruiser at Marten Yachts

Every month we’ll be posting regular updates on this revolutionary new design and if time allows technical descriptions of various areas of the design which we think are interesting. She’s our second yacht to be designed entirely in 3D using Rhino. As can be seen from the images on the site this has proven to be a valuable aid for both the builder and the owner in visualising the end product and hopefully making it easy to build.

The first interior drawing is a section through the yacht at the companionway bulkhead, clearly showing the construction method for the lockers and the space available under the saloon floor for the machinery space.

The drawing below is the saloon area with the engines below the floorboard and the navigation area forward. 3D clearly gives the owner the ability to visualise clearly something of what the final boat will look like, a function that would have been done before by artistic impressions/sketches. At the same time however, these images are real surfaces and allows an excellent level of interaction with the builder in the positioning of machinery and services, as well as the construction method of the interior, dimensioning etc. This has become even more critical with the larger blue water cruising boats as they approach the technical complexity of a small superyacht.
