First Australian built mini 6.5m on its way to the UK |
| Monday, 01 April 2002 |
The composite structure for Peter Scandling’s 6.5m mini transat yacht was recently completed at Rob Hick’s Melbourne yard. The pictures show the sequence of loading the completed hull and deck structure into a 40’ container prior to its despatch back to the United Kingdom.
The yacht’s internal structure is complete, with the coachroof left off as a separate moulding to aid final fitting out of the yacht’s systems and deck hardware. The third yacht in a series of ‘narrow’ waterline glass/foam boats from OCD, weight saving was sought after in the construction process by introducing a deck sheer round and building from a split centreline mould. Considerable cost savings were attained by building in Australia and, had circumstances permitted, the entire yacht would have been completed prior to shipping back to the UK.
However, ‘Rocket Science’ will be finished off in the UK by her owner in the West Country over the winter and may be campaigned in next summer’s mini events. She is unlikely to be taking part in the 2003 Mini Transat, the plan being to enter in 2005. |
