First race looms close for new Owen Clarke mini

Saturday, 06 July 2002
After a brutal 40 knot beat back to his home port of Cork from Plymouth after the launch of his all carbon mini it looks like the weather is to be a little more kind to the young Irishman next week. He’s entered in the Demi Cle Race, a single-handed event that sees the yachts sail this Sunday from Lorient to Cork, back along the coast to Baltimore, returning to Lorient after around ten days of racing. The priority will be to finish and notch up the event as a qualifier, but there looks like there will be a chance to compare form with the race favourites currently designed by mini specialist Seb Magnen. Not all the minis are sailing single-handed however and McCarthy will be sailing in a class of ten other ‘prototype’ minis. With only two events left this year at which McCarthy can qualify he’s eager to complete them and sail his 1000 mile single-handed qualifying passage in order to be sure of being on the start line for next year’s transat. As with previous years there is expected to be far more prospective entrants than places available.
