| As is always the case the race village for the 2005 Transat Jacques Vabre in Le Havre is a spectacular and vibrant place and one of the highlights of the calendar.
In choppy rough seas, fair weather and southwest winds at 20-25 knots, Kip Stone and Merfyn Owen aboard Artforms were off to a safe start of the Transat Jacques Vabre yesterday afternoon. After a close start Artforms slipped behind Gryphon Solo at the first mark and the fleet then headed upwind towards the headland at Cherbourg.
A text message received from the boat late last night said, “Coming up to Alderney Race. All well. Still in contact with some sixties.” In the polls this morning, Artforms led the Open 50 monohulls, with a slight edge over Gryphon Solo and almost 20 miles ahead of the rest of the class.
The forecast calls for high winds and rough seas for the next few days. “It’s going to be a slogfest” said Merf minutes before the start.
Merf will be sending regular updates, which will be posted exclusively on Sailing Anarchy, www.sailinganarchy.com
Kip’s skippers logs, which always make good reading will featured on www.ksopen50.com
