Owen Clarke Design have undertaken in co-operation with the Mari Cha Design Team the 2004 winter design modifications to the world's fastest monohull, Mari Cha 4. This has involved an evaluation of the balance of the yacht and a velocity performance prediction investigation. After racing on her at the Regatta de Voiles, in St Tropez and in consultation with the sailing team it has been decided to add twin asymmetric daggerboards. The aim of this modification is to improve further the performance of Mari Cha both in upwind and reaching conditions. The positioning, design and engineering of the six metre long boards that are capable of developing more than 9 tonnes of lift for a craft that is 140’ long has been one of our most stimulating consultancy projects.
Owen Clarke Design are particularly known as leaders in the development of swing keel cruising and racing yachts. We are at the moment designing a new set of daggerboards for the Open 50, Wells Fargo – originally designed by one of our main competitors in the Open Class, French designers Groupe Finot. As well as undertaking the design and engineering of these new appendages we have also engineered new keel rams and consulted on other modifications to be made to the yacht. Prior to Wells Fargo’s entry into the 2006/2007 5 Oceans Race where it will race against our own design, Artforms, we also expect to design a new rig, sail plan, keel and rudders for the yacht. |
