Podium for Ian Munslow

Sunday, 19 November 2006
Ian Munslow sailing his Class 40 'Bolands Mill' took the final podium place on Sunday evening in the 2006 edition of the Banque Postale Route du Rhum. Ians total time was 21 days 9hr 51mins for the course from St Malo to Guadeloupe. This is the highest ranking Ian has achieved in solo offshore events. Always close to the leader Ian proved the form of 'Bolands Mill' in the early stages of the race by being the second class 40 around the main turning mark of Cap Frehal. Over the first couple of days Ian was always up with the front runners but an unforeseen problem with the yachts steering mechanism which resulted in the failure of an Autopilot slowed Ian down to make repairs. With only one Autoppilot working and nearly 4000miles Ian sailed a more conservative course than he would have preferred. At one point mid race due to his weather routeing position Ian poled in 10th place, being part of Ians tactical weather plan this was short lived and Ian slowly reeled in the front runners, Phil Sharp and Gildas Morvan were however too far in front to catch and reluctantly Ian had to settle for third place. A great comeback and final result in his first race outing against other Class 40's means that Ian is fired up for his next season racing Bolands Mill. Watch out for Ians progress in the 2007 Fastnet and maybe even the Transat Jacques Vabre but first some beers and bed for our Intrepid Class 40 adventurer.
