Radical build method for Stone Open 50 |
| Wednesday, 14 August 2002 |
Nothing unusual in building in a female tool, many of the French open 60’s have been doing that for some time. However, in this case, the female mould is the plug. That is to say the female mould is the first tool and has not been produced by producing a male plug first, from which a female mould is taken.
The immediate benefits are a shorter build time and it is hoped a lower cost. The technical benefits will be less filler and a lighter boat. Weight is already being saved in the structure by the split centreline method which is being used to build Viktor Yazykov’s in Italy and was used recently on our minis for Cian McCarthy and Peter Scandling.
The program at present is for the structure to be completed and deck hardware attached by the end of the year, at which time the boat will be laid up awaiting the keel and rig which will be ordered next spring after more design development. It was decided to press ahead with the build at this time, so as not to loose the build slot with McConaghys, one of the worlds most sought after builders of high tech composite yachts. |
