After spending six months is the Pacific islands, primarily in Tahiti and the surrounding islands, Spirit of Adventure has returned to New Zealand.
In Tahiti as well sampling the local hospitality and warm climate the owner spent an extended period of six weeks cruising the region with his family, often with as many as eleven people on board. However for a boat with a large volume this was never a problem with room for all.
In what is a typical migration for cruising boats and superyachts, Spirit of Adventure then move south to New Zealand to avoid the cyclone season in the south pacific?
New Zealand is far enough south to avoid almost all except the very biggest of the tropical cyclones in the region and if by chance one makes it that far south it has weakened in strength.
While cruising in comfort with his extended family was one of the key elements of the owner's brief, the other key element was for a boat that could be easily sailed and delivered either solo or shorthanded. For the passage to New Zealand Peter made the trip with his long time sailing friend Ecki, covering the 2500 Nm passage in twelve days regularly covering greater than 220 miles in a 24-hour period and was only slowed by a large high and lack of wind as he reached New Zealand.
On arrival and proud of his fast passage he quickly commented “you must know I am very satisfied with design and construction of this boat” before proceeding to recount tales of comparing the boats performance at various wind strength and angles with those an Open 60 like Kingfisher using each boats polar curves. While noting he was a few clicks off full race pace he was still very happy.
The boat will now spend the summer in New Zealand, no doubt cruising the local harbours before reversing the migration back to warmer climate of the South Pacific.
