Teething problems for McCarthy in qualifying events |
| Thursday, 01 August 2002 |
| After finishing third in the Demi Cle prologue race and second proto on the first leg singlehanded to Crosshaven, McCarthy was around 15 miles ahead of the eventual winner Ian Munslow when his bowsprit failed on the downwind leg.
A similar failure on the repaired pole kept him in the middle of the fleet on the subsequent Triangle du Soleil and has prompted the young Irishman to go on a shopping trip to La Rochelle to pick up a standard pole from a French supplier there.
Hopefully, with a more robust pole system, there’s still time for McCarthy to get to the podium again in the final race and qualifying event of the season in September, the Challenge Mini race which is sailed in the Mediterranean.
After this the yacht will return to Ireland where there will be a debrief and some sailing with designers Matt Wood and Merfyn Owen as part of the program to optimise the boat and sought out any problems ready for next year’s mini transat.
