UK designers help Australian complete mini for Two Handed Trans Tasman Race.

Wednesday, 01 May 2002
With only two months before a major offshore yacht race, young Australian, Phil Bower's yacht had no rig, rudders, daggerboard, steering system, keel box, fin or bulb and, to cap it all, no drawings. The New Zealand designer was ‘buried’ in America’s Cup work and wouldn’t be able to help.

Could we fix it? Yes we could. Adapting components from several different minis, OCD designer Matt Wood in the UK, along with OCD design engineer Tim Sadler in New Zealand, were able to provide sufficient information for the build team in Australia to complete the boat before the start…..just.

A lot has to be said for the ‘can do’ attitude of the yacht’s skipper and of his builder, former BOC skipper Alan Nebauer. It also has to be said that digital cameras and long telephone calls at odd hours of the morning played their part too. This was an outstanding case of no job being too big, too small or, within reason, too late!
