US sailor Kip Stone leaves the Falkands

Thursday, 18 March 2004
After arriving in Port Stanley from Auckland NZ at the weekend, Kip Stone has left his crew from the last leg, Australian Alan Nebauer behind. He now carries on alone on his Owen Clarke designed fifty footer in order to gain valuable singlehanded experience and having qualified for this year's Transat Race in February They were greeted on their arrival and Kip was seen off by close family friend, Jay Cushman, who reports: Artforms pulled away from the FIPASS dock at 1200 Thursday Mar 18 in bright sun and a 20 kt breeze from the north. She was accompanied by motor launch Beagle, manned by Russell Evans and spouse, Deborah Ford, and FI Customs officer Shona Strange, and another chase boat. We followed Artforms out of Stanley Harbour and watched Kip raise the main to the #2 reef position, and shake out the solent, a small working jib. Pretty soon, she was speeding along at 11-12 knots as we swept from starboard to port to accomodate all the photographers madly snapping away. It was a moment of unalloyed joy to see Kip in command of this beautiful boat sailing off to the northeast in near-perfect conditions on his 6,000 mile plus journey to Plymouth, England.
