Acciona Open 60 preparing for the Vendee Globe

Merf Owen of designers Owen Clarke Design (OCD) has  been sailing Xavier Sanso’s Open 60 Acciona 100% Eco-Powered with the project team and the sailmakers from Incidences since last week in Palma. Fantastic unseasonal breeze has been an unexpected bonus. Everything from 6 knots to 30 knots has helped to get a handle on the sail cross-overs for the boat which is helping the choice of the final two sails that will suit the boat for the Vendee Globe. Over the next six weeks OCD will be using Router software to home in on the size of our light airs reaching sail and the southern ocean jib top.

Friday's sailing was a blast, solid 23/24 knots of true wind accompanied by a very wet 20 + kts of boat speed at 100 TWA shows us that the boat is capable of breaking the current IMOCA 60 24 hour record of 503 miles. Pachi Revero very excited about that! Bubi's going to have to hold him back during the offshore training they're on at the end of the month.

More photos (including the boat's incredible electric motor) loaded in our Facebook Acciona library here.
