Angels Share wins “Best Refit" trophy at International Superyacht Society Awards

Owen Clarke Design are proud to be associated with the  recent refit of the 40m superyacht Angel’s Share which won the best refit trophy at the International Superyacht Society Awards recently. Six other superyachts were also nominated including the Sensation Yachts built Mari Cha 3 and the 40m Feadship, Odyssey. This award is in addition to her winning the same category earlier in the year at the International Superyacht Awards in London.

At the end of January 2010 the yacht – a Wally 130 then named "Dream" – arrived at the Lürssen facilities in Rendsburg on the Kiel-Canal.

Key critical areas and tasks were:

  • Optimisation of the work being undertaken, including monitoring of weight removed verses weight added during the refit as the sailing performance had not to be affected negatively due to the refit work.
  • Achieving a higher quality standard in the less visible technical areas – such as engine room, electrical cabling, pipe-work etc. – in order to have an adequate standard assuring the continuous availability of all systems commensurate with blue water cruising.
  • Realizing a high-end Interior according to the wishes of the owner.
  • A complete re-designed deck area, both in terms of ergonomics and aesthetics.
  • A review of the rig and sail-plan and changes consistent with the intended role of long distance blue water cruiser.
  • Re-fairing and painting of the hull.
  • Fitting of an interceptor trim control system to improve performance of the yacht under sail.

Owen Clarke Design have been involved as advisers to the project managers pre-purchase, providing budgetary estimates, planning and technical advice on a range of tasks. As well as providing design input our work included modifcations that required the running of a tank testing program and trial sailing the yacht before exchange of contract and on the delivery to the Lürssen yard.

During the refit, as well as undertaking our own specific work we liaised with mast manufacturers, structural engineers and the composite team at the yard to ensure a thorough understanding of the modifications in hand and to ensure the work was carried out satisfactorily. This included four yard visits and subsequent trials on the yacht.

OCD’s work has continued since Angels Share was re-launched, with the optimisation of the IRC rating and on-going review of the yacht’s performance and identification of areas for future improvement. At the recent Voiles de St Tropez Merfyn Owen sailed on her pre-race and during the regatta, data-logging and providing input to the sailing team and North Sails. OCD continue to be involved in the development of the yacht and will be onboard during the three major regattas that Angels Share will take part in next year.
