Class40 2013 schedule finalised

In an announcement this week the Class 40 Association has committed to the next three Transat Jacques Vabres, as well as the Atlantic Cup in North America and six other crewed and double-handed events in 2013. Of course they are not the only events that Class 40’s will compete in over the coming year, but it will be these that contribute points in the annual completion that defines the class champion, won in 2008 by the first 40 Degrees, since renamed Cutlass and now based in the USA.

With the aim of creating a long-term race calendar, earlier this year the Class40 Association put out to tender the running of a biennial double-handed transatlantic race for the class. Since then they have received proposals from a number of race organisers including those of the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Solidaire du Chocolat.

And so, it is the new Transat Jacques Vabre association which has been chosen out of the proposals and the sizeable Class40 fleet will now be heading for Le Havre in October 2013 for the 20th anniversary of the 'Route du Café'.

In North America, The Atlantic Cup after its huge success in 2012 has rightly secured its place in the association’s calendar. Also 2013, being a Fastnet year, the class will surely have its own division again in this classic event in which twenty Class 40’s from eight countries (including Gryphon Solo and Dragon from the USA) competed in 2011.

In the shorter term, Class40 sailors, many of whom have recently competed in the Atlantic Cup and the Transat Québec Saint Malo, are on their way to Caen for the next event, the Normandy Channel Race running over 2-9 September, prior to finishing this long season with the ISAF Class40 World Championship in La Rochelle from 3rd-6th October.
