OCD 107 performance blue water cruiser

This is the latest large custom cruising design from Owen Clarke. A long distance blue water cruiser created as a cruiser racer to be equally at home at superyacht bucket regattas, luxurious family cruising in the Med. or making a trans-oceanic passage to the Caribbean. She is based on a larger Owen Clarke (OCD) 40m design this yacht has been developed in response to a client who requested similar features, accommodation and styling on a smaller platform. Modern, functional, and capable of fast passage making,  as well as being a luxurious home at anchor in remote bays for significant periods. Key to the concept and where often large sailing yachts can be compromised is the ease of running the deck and handling a large sail-plan with a small crew without modifying and re-configuring the yacht for different modes of sailing (regatta, oceanic or coastal cruising). From the performance side, the main target was not just to create a modern comfortable sailboat, but to retain the connection with the elements, a yacht which is both responsive and exciting to sail. One of the key elements in achieving this goal is the design and manufacture of the yacht in high performance engineering composites, a construction technique in which OCD have a great deal of specialist experience.

The hull and appendage configurations combine the latest in modern thinking within the bounds of readily maintainable and manageable technology, an evolution from Owen Clarke’s development work for their race boat designs. The hull by nature of its Open Class pedigree is both voluminous inside and can be sailed at more comfortable, lower angles of heel, compared to more conventional designs. The dreadnought bow offers a maximum waterline length, reduces the yacht’s displacement to length ratio and provides a safer and more secure deck space to handle spinnakers and furling gennakers. Mooring and particularly anchoring are also simpler without the additional complication of dealing with a bowsprit. She is fast, with powerful forward hull sections and aggressively chined aft quarters, which combined with her twin rudders result in high levels of directional stability, making her safe and easy to steer whether by autopilot or a novice helmsman. Options for the appendages include a fixed keel, when the emphasis is on performance around the race course, or a lifting keel where the practical requirements for cruising play a greater role. The lifting keel will have a range of over 2m and a max sailing draft up to 5.5 m. These values provide a sufficient aspect ratio required for windward/reaching performance and a bulb weight that optimises high stability for a moderate displacement, yet still enables access to those more remote locations.

The sail plan is both powerful and controllable, set on a three spreader carbon rig that incorporates the latest developments in short-handed sail handling technology, scaled up and applied to the challenges faced on modern superyachts. This rig features a two speed hydraulic furler at the bow that can handle both top down furling spinnakers as well as conventional furling code sails and jib tops. The high aspect ratio non-overlapping jib is set well back on its own dedicated hydraulic furler. A Staysail and an ORC storm sail with individual tack positions are spaced along the foredeck with separate mast locks and removable furling stays. ‘Bomb bay’ doors let into the foredeck cover large self draining lockers for the working sails so that the crew are spared the effort of stowing them in deep lockers. All halyards are lead to the deck mounted pit winches, with headsail and spinnaker sheets led to the winches in the central cockpit and aft deck respectively. The mainsheet runs below the deck to a captive winch.

The emphasis is comfort on deck, whether underway or alongside/at anchor the owner and guests have three separate areas in which to relax, separate if they wish from the sailing activity of the yacht. The owners have their own private (if they choose) aft terrace on the sea with direct access to their accommodation. Under this aft deck terrace there is space for substantial tender and associated water toys nested between the twin rudder stocks. The elevated sun lounging deck separates this area from the central cockpit which is at the same time a practical protected safe haven when sailing offshore, as well as a comfortable outside dining and lounging area. The wide side decks around the low profile superstructure connect the aft terrace to the clear uncluttered flush foredeck and discrete ‘gates’ in the coamings enable access to the cockpit. The deck saloon incorporates a dining area for eight (owner), ten (charter), with a large sofa seating area and dedicated bar facilities.

OCD have designed a four cabin layout in which the owner’s suite features a private lounge and dining area along with an adjoining owner’s stateroom. Access to the aft guest/owner’s areas is from the main saloon, the forward guest areas extend to adjacent of the mast, with the raised main saloon dominating mid-ships. In line with practical and seamanlike aspects of the design the main saloon incorporates a navigation/watch keeping station with the same panoramic views afforded to the guests when dining or relaxing. The main machinery space is situated under the raised saloon sole with walk in access adjacent to the aft companionway bulkhead. This feature allows easy access to the main machinery and systems yet is discreet enough to have no ergonomic impact on the owners/guests. The galley area is expansive enough to incorporate food preparation and plating up areas and provision in the main companionways for crystal and service crockery stowage.

The crew’s quarters is forward of the main galley and comprises a skippers cabin, separate open plan crew mess, two twin cabins for four crew and discrete laundry facilities. There is a generous forepeak area for the stowage of the usual equipment required on this size of yacht.

For the private owner looking to maximise the number of guests when chartering an alternative interior layout can be offered with five owner/guest cabins including a full width owner’s stateroom leading onto the aft terrace deck. The guest cabins can be modified to suit either twin or double bed arrangements and additional pullman berths can be fitted to the forward guest cabins to offer greater flexibility.
