Model testing, computer simulation and onboard performance development

Owen Clarke has undertaken numerous performance development and optimisation consultancies using the methodologies and design tools described in the NAVAL ARCHITECTURE page of our website. A recent example would be the work undertaken on the 40m Wally Angels Share (ex Dream). An addition to our standard approach was the construction of a tank test model to fine tune the cross-overs and evolve precise drag curves for the yacht with and without the use of its water ballast. This information was then used in combination with meteo/vpp race modeling to decide whether the boat would be rated under IRC (newly adopted by the Wally Class that year) with water ballast for the season.

In addition to performance related tasks, OCD were contracted as advisers to the project managers pre-purchase, providing budgetary estimates, planning and technical advice on a range of subjects. During the refit, as well as undertaking our own specific work OCD liaised with mast manufacturers, structural engineers and the composite team at the yard to ensure a thorough understanding of the modifications in hand and to ensure the work was carried out satisfactorily.

OCD’s work has continued since Angels Share was re-launched, with the optimisation of the IRC rating and on-going review of the yacht’s performance and identification of areas for future improvement. This has included Merfyn Owen sailing on the yacht prior to and during  the 2011 Voiles St Tropez data-logging, modifying polars/cross-overs and providing input to the sailing team and North Sails.
