OC have extensive experience in the design from first principles of one off complex custom carbon components and deck hardware. Two of our projects for 2015 and 2016 were the design of the rudder and steering system for the commissioning owners of two 35m maxi racing superyachts. Both vessels had twin rudder systems for which OC developed two separate methods of disengaging the windward rudder remotely at the helm and thereby trail in neutral at low drag. OC also completed two different quadrant designs based on the individual owner's steering system requirements. We developed the designs from an OC IMOCA 60 racing yacht, using steering loads calculated from our in-house software that was also used in the engineering of the prepreg carbon rudders

A CAD model was developed based around a carefully engineered honeycomb core and multi-directional thin carbon skin laminates. The 3D CAD model enabled the use of CNC machined tapered cores between the carbon laminate skins created along with the female mould tooling. The clamp fitting and some other small parts were 3D CAD modelled and CNC machined from high strength aluminium alloy or titanium. The final assembly weighed less than half that of a comparable fabricated titanium or machined aluminium component. For the second yacht OC also created a custom carbon wheel steering pedestal, sourced all parts, integrated them into a consequent modern design and created CAD CAM files for the builder.
