Class 40 Open Hupane

Formerly owned and prepared by Ross Field for the Global Ocean Race, the Guillaume Verdier designed, Class 40, Hupane is now for sale through OC. Sister-ship of Gio Soldini’s winning Telecom Italia and fore-runner of a string of highly successful Tyker 40s, Hupane is Cat A (Ocean) ready, has recently been refitted and is lying in Auckland New Zealand. She is undoubtedly one of the fastest short-handed race boats in the Pacific region, a great boat for Round North Island, Trans- Tasman TransPac etc and without doubt capable of taking the Melbourne-Osaka record from her longer waterline competitors. This is a well sorted, reliable, proven Class40/short-handed sailing yacht ready to sail to anywhere on the Pacific rim, including the west coast of the US, without the cost and time spent shipping from Europe.

Hupane was originally built for Felipe Cubillos and José Muñoz, who then raced the yacht as Desafio Cabo de Hornos in the 2008/2009 Portimao Global Ocean Race in which they finished second, having won two of the five legs. The Chilean pair, the first to complete a race circumnavigation from that country then took the boat to a third place in the Class 40 Worlds, held that year in the Hamble, UK.

The yacht was shipped back to and laid up in Chile in 2010, whereon it was purchased by Whitbread round the world race winner Ross Field and renamed Buckley Systems for the 2011/2012 edition of the GOR. The yacht was shipped back in the Spring of 2011 to the UK and refitted at the Berthon yard in Lymington prior to beginning the race in September.
Ross and his son Campbell won the first leg into Cape Town, beating Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron on Campagne de France by a little over 14 hours. Placing a close second in the second leg into their home town of Auckland, the New Zealand pair, along with another competitor retired in the third leg when it became clear that a very larger storm system was due to envelope the fleet. They returned to Auckland, without damaging the yacht and put her on the market under her christened name, Hupane. She has done some local racing since relocating to Auckland and below is a quote from her owner on a recent outing.
"Raced Hupane in the Coastal Classic (Auckland to Bay of Islands) with 140 other boats. Came 2nd in class on PHRF and 5th overall. Interesting is we at least held a new Ker 40 footer on the wind in 18/20 knots from Cape Brett to the finish. Lovely weather from the south west and finished in 12 hours one minute." More recently in 2016 and still campaigning the boat her owner told us " Hupane has finished 2nd in the Auckland-Fiji race on corrected time. Only yacht to beat us was the old Volvo 70,Grouparama (winner of the Sydney Hobart later in the year) in what was a big boat race. Cleaned up the canting keel, carbon yachts with breeze forward of the beam."
