This custom ocean cruising boat design was based upon a specification laid down by an existing client whose current blue water sailboat was a Jongert. The brief to us a designers was for a family cruising yacht for fast ocean passages and to circumnavigate with minimum professional crew. Indicative pricing subject to final specification and contract was attained from build yard and suppliers. Among the main factors that drove the styling of the exterior is the requirement for all round views when dining on deck in the coachroof saloon.

Owen Clarke are designers who deliver fast custom cruising boat, advanced sailboat and superyacht design with style and reliability derived from our offshore and ocean racing background. This 30m blue water cruising design is at the upper end of what is considered a cruising yacht, and at the lower end in terms of size for a superyacht.

The hull form, in this case with a single rudder, was driven by the internal volume of the clients particular accommodation requirements. Also, because his existing yacht (and his preference) has an owner’s cabin aft we began the design process with that layout. Alternate owners cabin layout midships or forward have their own advantages and disadvantages. OC developed two novel design features in the main saloon area. Access to the full width large owner’s suite is via a private stairwell on the starboard side of the raised main saloon which is divided into dining to port and lounge area to starboard.

Secondly, the main saloon itself sits under a retractable glass roof and aft glazed bulkhead that can be opened to allow alfresco dining/seating in port or underway. The chart table/navigation area (port side aft of dining area) and saloon seating are set at a height that provides panoramic seated eye level views. There is no provision for seating/dining below since with a spacious deck saloon (4.5m x 5m) that can be used in fine or poor weather it was felt that the volume below was better used on a long distance blue water yacht to provide for a single large machinery space, workshop and large storage lockers accessible from the deck.
