O Canada started the 2008 Vendee Globe and retired to Hobart, Australia after damaging spreaders during a knockdown in the Indian Ocean. The yacht was subsequently transferred to private ownership, has taken part in a number of non IMOCA regattas but has raced relatively few miles since. She therefore presents very well and is very much worth viewing for those sailors looking for entry level boat with a good pedigree to enter the IMOCA class. The yacht has potential for modifications that would improve performance further. For instance, the structure would permit modification to the new edition of the rule that eliminates the 10-degree static stability requirement.  The forged keel is not compliant to the latest IMOCA rule, although subject to survey and regular inspection there should be no reason that she should not continue to race. A new IMOCA compliant fin is recommended by the designers and would be mandatory for a Vendee Globe entry.

O Canada is an IMOCA 60, fitted with a three-spreader classic rig and running backstays. Twin rudders, asymmetric dagger boards, single piece CNC steel canting keel with lead bulb and ballast tanks. She is built in pre-pregcarbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb, with Corecell core in the forward slamming areas. O Canada was Owen Clarke’s fourth Open 60, designed for Canadian yachtsman Derek Hatfield. Construction began shortly after the launch of Mike Golding’s highly successful Ecover 2, winner of the 2004 Transat and third in that years Vendee Globe. O Canada is an identical sistership to Ecover 2, apart from a heavier forged steel keel and taller classic three spreader rig. The yacht’s keel canting system, composite engineering and construction is identical to Ecover 2. The yacht was built in two stages: hull and deck were built near Toronto, Canada with a team that included former builders from the well-known American yard Goetz. The final assembly and fit out was completed in 2007 by a French team from JMV.
