The client approached OC for a high performance day boat design to sail himself, with guests, no particular limit to length specified, completed to superyacht standards. The emphasis to be on external deck space, performance and a minimalist say sailer interior to a specification equivalent to a Wally type racer-cruiser. Included is basic accommodation forward in case crew need to stay onboard at night, at anchor or for security reasons. There is an interior saloon accessed from the aft terrace, for relaxation and interior dining, but no requirement for an owner’s overnight cabin.
The weight of the interior fit out is less than a conventional yacht and this lends itself to the option of a canting keel since the fin and bulb will form a high % of available righting moment. A canting keel also has the benefit when cruising in light airs that it can be canted to leeward helping to keep sails full and maintain boat speed (instead of turning on the engine early). When sailing in moderate breeze it can be deployed keeping the yacht relatively flat, under-powered and comfortable, since it provides a substantial % of the yacht’s righting moment even at low angles of heel.
The aft terrace is a secure lounging and relaxation space providing access to the saloon and up on to the side decks. The twin wheels, working cockpit and exterior dining area are in the centre of the yacht above the machinery space. Twin hydraulic primary winches and a single hydraulic pit winch provide for gennaker sheets and halyards. The headsail, mainsail and running backstays are controlled by a push button ‘Magic Trim’ system which allows ‘automatic’ tacking and gybing. With a lifting or fixed keel an alternate interior layout with forward guest cabins is a further option.
This owner’s saloon consists of a lounge area to starboard and a dining area to port. The starboard seating is modular and can be adapted to increase the number of places available for interior dining to 6/8. The ‘occasional’ owner’s double berth is a folding queen size bed hidden behind the seating in the dining area. The head and shower space situated on the starboard side can be either private or used as a dual day head. A passageway forward provides access to the machinery space and crew area. A self-draining RIB and recreation garage is situated forward with ‘bomb bay’ hatches to the foredeck.
