What do you design for a man with three homes in three different continents, a successful business, who flies his own helicopter, and has a penchant for the finer things in life? Spirit of Adventure is a custom high performance ocean cruising yacht, with the interior and detailing of a mini superyacht. Both exterior lines and the yacht interior design are by lead designer Allen Clarke. SOA is the definition of style and elegance in a modern cruising sailboat for the 21st century. A luxury custom cruising design for fast ocean cruising capable of being sailed by a small crew, and occasionally single-handed.
In styling the boat, the client particularly wanted to maintain some consistency with the form of an IMOCA 60, whilst improving comfort and protection from wind and weather. Lead designer Allen Clarke had the delicate job of balancing the requirements of sea keeping, comfort and a luxurious accommodation with the all-round performance for the yacht to achieve 240 mile a day averages in cruising mode. The result is a wide comfortable hull form with twin wheels, separate working cockpit and a full-length undercover lounge cockpit that can seat eight for dinner, sheltered behind and under a large coach roof.

Stability and righting moment are high, commensurate with a blue water passage making yacht designed to round Cape Horn, as the owner has done once before. OC’s single-handed race design pedigree ensures that Spirit is at the same time easy to handle, stable and safe to sail for prolonged periods under autopilot in any conditions. Features requested by the client include a canting and lifting keel, furling mainsail and furling headsails. In keeping with the design remit, there are limited electric and hydraulic systems for sail and winch handling, all of which are backed up by a manual pedestal grinder in the cockpit.

Spirit of Adventure was the second Owen Clarke Design yacht to be designed predominantly in 3D. Tim Sadler, our engineer, was responsible for the complete and detailed design of the yacht’s systems, keel and hydraulic mechanisms, retracting bowsprit etc. Allen Clarke carried out the interior styling and design to the client’s wife’s very particular specification. Needless to say, she was delighted with the result. As well as being the yacht’s designers and naval architects, Owen Clarke were contracted to provide the project management package. The brief was to oversee the construction of the yacht from conception to turn-key delivery.

"Dear Merf and Allen
Friday last week, I and my friend Ecki arrived well in Auckland around 0200 pm on the mooring of the customs. In exact 12 days we sailed 2483 m (more, because I calculated it only in the charts day by day). We have had wind till 45 knots and the ship was sailing very safe with the solent and 2 reefs in the main on an angle to the wind of 120 till 140 degrees. In this strong wind we have got a speed of around 16 kn. The ship was always easy to control and to handle. So, I will confirm you once again this ship is really my dream. Thank you. It was the right decision.”
Peter Trost, owner of Spirit of Adventure.
