Our office has a diverse cruising portfolio ranging from a sail training ketch to stylish modern 30m and 40m superyachts. We currently have a 66' high latitude aluminium expedition yacht under construction in Holland and this will be followed in 2017 by a composite 75' lifting keel blue water cruising boat for which we are currently developing a build tender package with the client. OCD secured both these designs because the owners find our breadth of experience both as sailors and designers/naval architects reassuring. Also, if we don't have the answer in-house we don't improvise or compromise, we'll either know or find someone who does. We've created and worked as part of design teams on complex projects since the Kingfisher campaign in 1999.This mindset, experience and first principles approach to design pays real divedends, particularly where the owner is looking for something different or challenging in terms of goals for their project or yacht.
A prime example of our work and approach is Spirit of Adventure: Launched on budget and on time and pictured above on her maiden cruise to Kauwau Island in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. In 2005 her sixty nine year old owner sailed her single-handed from Auckland to Tahiti. In 2006 and 2007 she sailed the Pacific again with extended members of the owner's family before being sailed yet again singlehanded back from Tahiti to Auckland. In 2008 with various friends and family aboard she made her way to Africa north over Australia to Indonesia, before crossing the Indian Ocean later in the year, finally mooring up in the Seychelles before Xmas.
“The design and your management of the yacht while it was built in the yard was perfect. For this I thank you Allen, Merfyn, Tim and Liz”. (The owner, Spirit of Adventure, March 2004)
